I found this photo essay about the life of Afghan women. It was appaling how horrible the lives of Afghan women is. I knew that it was rough but wow. On of the pictures shows a woman with severe burns on her neck and the caption says that a lot of women light themselve on fire, mainly with cooking oil. I cannot imagine what these women have to go through. this photo essay really opened my eyes to some of the horrors of the world.

This photo essay had a very emotional subject. Each and every photo shared something different and it's just so sad to see that people live like that. I know sometimes I say that my life is difficult and hard to handle, and just basically sucks sometimes, but it's really not as bad as it seems. I just can't believe that anyone would have to go through such horrible things in their lives. These photos were very eye-opening and I had no idea that things were really that bad.
This photo essay was heart-wrenching. Two photos stood out the most to me: the picture of the woman at the lake, and the picture of the woman found dead by her sister. With the lake picture, I was blown away by the contrast between the beauty of the scenery in the background and the ugliness of the subject matter in the foreground. The line in the caption that read, "the husband pushed her into the lake three times" read so negatively to me. The tether was also saddening. That they would risk the woman drowning to conceive a child breaks my heart.
The second picture I mentioned - the one of the woman found dead by her sister - was a shock to my system, especially after reading that her brothers had committed the murder. I was appalled that in Afghanistan, brothers kill their sisters for "dishonoring" the family. What did that woman do besides enjoy music and chose to wear something with a little more color? Are those not privileges that we, as American women, get to enjoy everyday?
Despite the large bodies of text beneath each photo, this photo essay was incredibly powerful. The subject matter was so moving and the pictures -- very artfully done.
This photo essay was just shocking to look at. It was unbelievable that for many, this is the norm for living. It makes you realize how lucky our country is not to have to see things like this on the streets every day. This being said, the picture of the Band-i-Amir Lake was absolutely beautiful, but then when you read the caption, you see what they are actually doing. In this photo essay, I thought that the words were very helpful and necessary in explaining what was going on.
